Negative of a monument to Herman Davis. Davis was a Private in the 113th Infantry. He enlisted in March, 1918. He was awarded four medals during his service, including the United States Distinguished Service Cross. The monument lists his military record as well as two quotes about his service. The monument is located in Manila, Mississippi County, Arkansas. It reads, "Herman Davis, Pvt. Co. I, 113th Inf., Sharpshooter and Company Runner. Enlisted March 14th, 1918; Honorably discharged May 29th, 1919. Cited for bravery for extraordinary heroism in action and decorated with: U.S. Distinguished Service Cross: October, 10th 1918; French Croix de Guerre with Palm: Apr. 19th, 1919; Gilt Star For Croix de Guerre: Apr. 23rd, 1919; French Medaille Militaire: May 10th, 1919. 'A most courageous runner who singlehanded [sic] attacked a machine gun nest which was preventing the advance of his platoon and killed the four gunners," from citation. 'The smallest but bravest and best liked man in my company, ' his captain."

Herman Stearns Davis, an astronomer, was born August 6, 1868, in Milford, DE. Davis graduated cum laude from Princeton University in 1892 and received his A.M degree (1894) and Ph.D.(1895) from Columbia University. From 1895-1899, Davis served as a professor of astronomy and geodessy at Columbia. In 1900 he became assistant at the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey and went on to serve as director of the International Latitude Observatory in Gaithersburg, MD until 1905.
